#GROOMING: The Gentleman’s Beard Oil in Fresh Wood

We recently received a package from Hashtag Awesome containing a small sampling of their Gentleman’s Beard Oil. After sneaking a little smell of the oils we immediately contact our RENASCENCE Magazine Sub-Editor, Buntu Sotyantya to come collect and test. He is the only one on the team with a flourishing beard. Luckily for us, Buntu was happy to oblige.

After a few weeks of use Buntu found the oil to work best if applied every other day, as opposed to everyday. Generally, the beard would dry after midday as you head out to evening. It applied smoothly with minimal oil residue on the hands. Something to note is the textural difference of hair between races, so this specific reaction to the beard from the oils might not happen to someone with perhaps less aggressive facial hair. The oil is fragrant but not in an overpowering way.

Essentially, the beard oil is cool. One just needs to decipher the right amounts of oil to use per application to take full care of your beard and its specific texture.

#EVENT: The 154th L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate 2015

Cape Town, Kenilworth Racecourse, Saturday, 10 January 2015 sees the 154th L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate hit the ground running; running 12 races with the country’s top thoroughbreds hammer the turf in pursuit of the R1 million purse. Some of this year’s sponsors include the delicious Skyy Vodka brand and luxury automobile brand, BMW.

While others will attend to play their cards right and own a share of the winnings, some will be there to soak up some of the hottest fashion and style the event visitors will have to showcase. As superficial as it may sound, L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate (LQP) is one of the most prestigious horseracing events in the country and attendees take their dress code very seriously – so do we.

Expect to find the teams from Skyy Vodka and Peroni Nastro Azzurro in the Stud Club section of the LQP Hospitality area. Stud Club is officially the marquee to be seen in. It’s young, vibrant, and all about the style and class of its temporary inhabitants. We too hope to rub shoulders once more with the who’s who in Stud Club.

The beauty of the LQP’s theme is in its simplicity: Blue & White. Guys, you only have one thing to do – dress in blue and white. You can’t possibly fail at this. It also prevents moments such as those from J&B Met and sometimes Durban July, where people get too carried away with the theme and start looking more Star Trek than anything else.

To help you gents out just a little, we’ve put together some content to give you ideas of which direction to head in.

COLOUR

Blue & White: it’s that simple. Here are some trending Pantone colours within that bracket for you to work with as a start. The below palette is put together to inspire and guide you with regards to the different tones and hues of blue you can buy into and the variants of white (in other words – gray) you can pair with the blues.

A small recommendation is to stick to two colours – blue with an offsetting white or cream. In some instances pairing a lighter blue with a darker one can create a very elegant combination. Try to avoid hosting too many colours on your body; it could look trivial.

STYLE

The general feel is for gents to put on their blazers, some pants, a great crisp shirt and some comfy complementary loafers of some sort. Denims are appropriate, especially for those going for a smart casual look. Formal attire guys are likely to be best in their two- or three-piece suits with shirt and tie or bowtie and pocket-square.

Although one can get nippy about their hemline getting dirty, it does look better when the lighter colour is your pair of pants and the darker colour your blazer. However, that is not set in stone. Chinos are great in a pure blue or navy, paired with a striped or checked shirt and navy blazer. That can also be accessorised with a pocket-square and a panama hat.

Tickets for the 154th L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate 2015 are available via www.computicket.com.

#THE_LOOKBOOK: Smart Casual Ropes

As the year starts afresh, the summer continues to gather momentum and I further seek to source the perfect smart casual summer looks perfect for day and night. A combination of denim and cotton never fails and in the right proportions can extend a simple look into something playfully special. This post’s look – Smart Casual Ropes – refers to the looks versatility and its inclusion of a bag’s strap as an accessory.

The shirt by Old Khaki – XXXL Jono long-sleeved micro-check shirt in red/white

This shirt is Old Khaki’s signature slim fit shirt. It’s about absolute comfort, form and fit. Don’t mind the fact that I’m wearing it five sizes too big – that’s just me chasing my oversized everything look. The shirt is darted at the back on two points to create form and fit and the cut of the shirt itself is fitted. It sits lightly on the body and if bought in the right size, will not pull or tug in places when moving.

The shirt retails for R399 at Old Khaki outlets across the country.

The jeans by Levi Strauss – 510 Slim fit in indigo

These denims are probably one of three favourite pairs on my rail at the moment. Extremely comfortable and perfectly fitting, they never fail to complement any outfit planned. With their slightly tapered leg, rolling the hem up means a fitted cut that the bottom, further creating shape. They are high-rise, so technically are supposed to be sitting on your high waist; this is great, in my opinion, as it gives your look a high waist effect without wearing high-waist jeans.

The shoes by Old Khaki – The Dawson shoe in black

The Dawson from Old Khaki is a kick-ass shoe. I know this because many have already complimented it while paraded on my feet. It’s the kind of shoe that’s not too square, too round or too pointed by the toe. It’s the kind of exact oval that we all want. Treated to a matt finish, the leather upper is textured and creates a more tactile appearance. Super comfortable, you could survive an entire day of activity on your feet.

The Dawson retails for R899 at Old Khaki outlets across the country.

The shades by Ray-Ban – Denim Wayfarer

Ray-Ban recently launched a series of textured sunglasses. Combining a range of fabrics and prints to their signature Wayfarer shades, Ray-Ban has created a whole new level to the game of eyewear. This denim pair has a very strong and cool look. Essentially, several layers of very thickly woven 100% Italian denim have been heat pressed together to create these sunnies, meaning I’m literally wearing denim on my face.

The belt by Carolina Herrera – The rope

The rope is actually a bag strap from a Carolina Herrera bag that I own. I have a tendency of not shopping for belts and then on occasion realise that I want to wear a belt with some outfits. It’s in those moments when I just look around my wardrobe and find something to appropriate as a belt. What I enjoy about using this rope as a belt is it somehow creates an almost sailor/nautical kind of feel to everything. Well, in my mind it does at least.

The bag by Woolworths – Leather laptop briefcase

My best bag in the collection! Not sure why, though, because it doesn’t carry my entire life but I love it so. Bought some many moons ago from Woolworths, this soft leather laptop briefcase is great for the weekend day out and for work. In its compact size it carries quite a bit weight and stays slim throughout. I also enjoy the easy to maintain aspect of the leather. One warm-cloth wipe and the dust is all gone.

The point of this look is to inspire a more playful approach to your wardrobe. If you don’t like your shirts too big, buy it in your size. You like wearing hats? Pair this look with a 5-panel peak cap or a panama hat. Perhaps you’re a chino kind of guy; go fir it and replace the denims with chinos. Even a pair of chino shorts would well great here and maybe swap the shoes for casual boat shoes instead. Whatever works for you – the point is to explore.

Creating A Connection | Visiting Birmingham

Wearing - Marmot Precip Jacket | Uniqlo Shirt | White T-Shirt Co. Tee | Albam Jeans | Converse 1970s Trainers | CHUP Socks | Patagonia Backpack | TRiCKETT Baseball Cap

The benefits of connecting with your peers in real life go far beyond enjoying a nice coffee every now and then - though that's definitely a plus. It's a way of sounding off ideas, forming meaningful relationships, experiencing new places, becoming involved in collaborative projects, and a contributing factor to making us feel satisfied and content in life. Well, it is for this guy anyway. I spend a lot of time alone, beavering away to try and make this freelance lark work, so when I do get the chance to visit a new town or city for work I always enjoy hooking up with the people that I've made connections with online.

On a recent trip to Birmingham to shoot in the Liquor Store I took the opportunity to meet up with Ming Nham, a man of many talents and many wise words to share. We explored Ming's city, visiting the insane looking city library, the Ikon Gallery, a few independent stores and stopped for a quick break in Faculty Coffee. I need more of this in 2015 please - more exploring, more connecting, more real life.

I'll be in London for a few days next week, so if anyone fancies meeting then just drop me a line.
