Today’s mass marketing tactics and mega existences of ‘celebrities’ has let to the superstar being corrupted, ambiguous and somewhat rudimentary. What it means to be a real superstar is almost obsolete because society has forgotten its true meaning. But not for long though.

adidas Originals is re-launching one of their most iconic shoes – the Superstar. First introduced in 1969, the shoe became an instant hit and saw itself move seamlessly between sport and sidewalks. The Superstar has seen great moments including the move from the basketball court to become the official footwear selection in the 80s New York hip-hop scene.

Now, through the launch of a 90 second film , directed by Karim Huu Do and featuring superstars Pharrell Williams, David Beckham and Damian Lillard, adidas Originals is bringing this iconic shoe back to question everyone’s current concept of the superstar.

Yep the wall, I'm at the wall again. Someone recently said to me, "...looking forward to seeing it (referring to a bag I just bought) at the wall sometime soon". This is true, I have a limited amount of locations up my sleeve, unless I actually visit a new town. But as I've loosely pencilled in 2015 as the "year of road trips", who knows what weird and wonderful places I'll have as a backdrop. On a scale of one to Yasumi (Yasumi being 10, because look), I'm aiming for a realist seven.

The plan is for me and Nik to drive across Europe - starting at mine in Lancashire, then down to France, and then on to wherever will have us! A realistic seven. Belgium, Holland, Germany, Denmark...stopping off for a couple of days in each country. As I write this it's sounding more like a potential eight - we've got to make this happen!

I realise none of this has anything to do with the photos above, I've gone off on one. I'd call this outfit "Dad's Day Off", as the combination of the Barbour Jacket + Wolverine Boots makes me think I'd be more suited to a Range Rover than a Fiat 500. They'd both serve as trusty companions for a trip across Europe.


So does anyone have experience in planning road trips like this? We're thinking rent some wheels, sort out some sweet places and go from there. Dom Joly's Happy Hour springs to mind. If there's any travel companies reading please do get in touch!

Not sure how long we’ve been shouting to the gods for a menswear week, but we have, and it seems to have come true. SA Menswear Week launches this February with what appears to be a stellar combination of young blood and solid talent. Attendees can expect showcases from veteran designers such as, CSquared, Craig Port, Naked Ape and Palse Homme. Young creative such as Jenevieve Lyons and Rich Mnisi will also take centre stage to show us what they’ve got.

For the better part, it’s excitement all around. However, with such a magnificent historical moment about to happen, one can’t help but be anxious as well. Expectations are being assembled and unfortunately, there is no room for error (well, maybe a little bit of room). Ryan Beswick, Founder of SA Menswear Week, and his team have their work cut out for them. But, insiders are reporting things are completely under control and moving on time.

This past weekend, model castings we hosting in the city in collaboration with Cape Town Fashion Council (CTFC). Word is, the stranger the model the better. So it seems the unusual male model will take centre-stage as opposed to the pretty faced guys we usually get.

With all the activity happening, it’s hard not to dance in the energy. One just needs to remain focused and remember the job at hand. We’re looking forward to SA Menswear Week, and bringing it to you LIVE on social media and the blog.

We recently received a package from Hashtag Awesome containing a small sampling of their Gentleman’s Beard Oil. After sneaking a little smell of the oils we immediately contact our RENASCENCE Magazine Sub-Editor, Buntu Sotyantya to come collect and test. He is the only one on the team with a flourishing beard. Luckily for us, Buntu was happy to oblige.

After a few weeks of use Buntu found the oil to work best if applied every other day, as opposed to everyday. Generally, the beard would dry after midday as you head out to evening. It applied smoothly with minimal oil residue on the hands. Something to note is the textural difference of hair between races, so this specific reaction to the beard from the oils might not happen to someone with perhaps less aggressive facial hair. The oil is fragrant but not in an overpowering way.

Essentially, the beard oil is cool. One just needs to decipher the right amounts of oil to use per application to take full care of your beard and its specific texture.
