#COLLECTION: Vashtie for PUMA – The Latest in NYC Collaborations

A little while ago we were doing our store visits and found ourselves snapping away at available product inside the PUMA Select store on Bree Street in Cape Town. We too a sneak snap at a black box with ‘Vashtie PUMA’ branding on it… No one was saying much but we kind of figured the surprise would be worth it.

Today, in-store right now, you can find the newly launched PUMA x Vashtie SS15 Collection. A sleek unisex separates collaboration between multi-talented New Yorker, Vashtie Kola, and PUMA International. Kola, a Creative Consultant, DJ and Filmmaker (amongst other titles), took inspiration for the collaboration from the downtown NY scenes from the 80s and 90s. What the collection with PUMA results in, is a incredibly sublime and cool take on the B Boy culture.

“When PUMA reach out I was immediately interested in this collaboration as I grew up following the brand. As a child I was drawn toward skate boarding and alternative music and looked to PUMA for fashion trends. I’m excited to create this collection that pays homage to my childhood and New York’s underground scene.” – Vashtie Kola

Other stores where you can get your hands on the PUMA x Vashtie Collection include Shelflife, Dip Street Store, Soho, Lyme, X-Trend, Queens and Brands Unlimited.

#REVIEW: SA Menswear Week – Day 3

Day 3 of Menswear Week in Cape Town was the longest day of fashion week – with it hosting the most shows. If you missed Day 2, catch it here. The was much anticipation around the Menswear Fashion Presentation which was a static show of emerging designers, and also the most talked about show being Chulaap by Chu Suwannapha. Everyone was in full gear and rearing to go.

Chulaap by Chu Suwannapha

MM: Chulaap by Chu Suwannapha presented a contemporary look at the African aesthetic. Styled to impersonate people on the street and how they would wear their clothes whether en route to an event or just work or play, the collection was a direct representation of Chu’s love for prints. Overlaid and meshed together impeccably, the collection visually was stunning but didn’t present any new silhouettes to enjoy. An innovative element form the collection was the combination of bag-into-outerwear. Being able to wear your jacket as a backpack and vice versa for me was a truly interesting aspect. The colour palette was earthy, rustic red, with great poppy yellows. The collection details of interest also include the origami swans – what a cute little detail feature. Modern man is going to look good in these pieces, especially when he breaks it apart and wears a piece with another item much more subtle.

BL: What a way to debut a collection during the inaugural menswear week. As they call him the prince of prints, he is the truth and we are the witnesses. Before prints came to the party he personally rocked them, in high definition without any worries of what the masses would say. And in his collection it was not different, he embraced what he believed in and that is true to his heart. What we never saw coming was the head wear. It was authentic, raw and most of it was nothing like any other…original. Back to prints…it was all of them, in earthy colours, fine florals, geometric shapes and the artistry as a whole. After seeing this display of prints, people will not only start to take note, but have respect for the construction behind the whole process.

Ruald Rheeder

BL: And to close off the show and the week was boy wonder Ruald Rheeder who again didn’t seem to stop with his continuation of amazing grace. As hot as the venue was, but we actually felt and even saw the breeze blowing the Ruald Rheeder man as he graced the runway. There were mixed feelings out there…at first glance we saw him on a safari trail. The next thing we look up again we saw the desert bohemian flowing in a breeze with light and harmonious fabric and fragile tones to the outdoor heats. The highlight of it all was seeing the Ruald Rheeder men for the final walk looking like Arabic warriors of the Dakar deserts.

For a first-timer, this event was well executed. Glitches here and there but no event goes without teething issues. Even if they are sometimes only backstage and no one at the front notices. We’re looking forward to the next instalment of SA Menswear Week and keen to see if the talent pool will get bigger and deeper or shallow out like some fashion weeks in this country.

Until the next…

#REVIEW: SA Menswear Week Day 2

Day 2 of SA Menswear Week started off a little better than Day 1. The heat was still there but there seemed to be way more order than the day before. The line-up was pretty decent, with a showcase of African (from outside South Africa) designers: Mustafa Hassanali & Abrantie the Gentleman. Craig Port pretty much dominated the line-up with two labels of his being showcased: Craig Port and Lucky Luke, An interested come-back kid brand, Magents, also graced the line-up with their presence.

Here are our highlights for the day:

Abrantie the Gentleman

Brian Lehang (BL): This was where tradition met modernity. Abrantie stayed true to his designs and his belief of the modern gentleman who knows where his origins are rooted. He kept it simple with colour: using white, black and a touch of red. However the complexity of the designs with immense effort put in every piece keeping it very Ghanaian without using his traditional colors was the boldest highlight. When one watches the shows he doesn’t have to ask, it’s in black and white.

Palse Homme

BL: We often see luxury on women clothing, now right here it is luxury at first at its best. In this collection its intense high fashion yet very practical. As bold and daring as they are one can still wear them regardless of occasion or no occasion. The Palse Homme should be wearing these pieces with pride and not to seek attention because that’s a given. Every quality of the fabric used in this collection is rich and the art of prints is so narrative it was just a movie on the runway. With this collection it was not just about the designs but also the creative styling of every look was well executed.

Monde Mtsi (MM): Paledi Segapo, of Palse, delivered a well-styled collection. Combing elements from previous collections with those of the new. Models came out ablaze with fiery painted eyes and faces. It all seemed rather tribal in a concrete jungle kind of way. Palettes and hues ranged from earthy desert colours to a few cool blues. The silhouette was a strong, tall rectangle.

Magents

MM: Keeping it real to the core, Magents entered the scene some moons ago with a truckload of energy. It appears the energy levels have only increased with passing years. Stepping up to the plate as the guy’s-guy brand, Magents showcased a vibrant collection of street, sports leisurewear. Colour and activewear pieces merged to culminate in a range of great styles in genuine and comfortable fabrics. From what started out as a humble shoe brand, into now a fully fledged lifestyle brand, the collection showcased creative applications to footwear and further relived its brand ethos through branded tees reading slogans such as “Amandla Awethu” and “Do you know what a igusheshe is”. True street. True South Africa.

In case you’re wondering how we got to day 2 with no mention of day 1, we have! It’s over here. Now look out for Day 3 coming up next.

#EVENT: The Mercedes-Benz BOKEH Fashion Film Festival Returns to SA

2015 sees the return of the Mercedes-Benz BOKEH Fashion Film Festival. We missed the media launch, which took place in February, however we did not miss the press release.

After a resounding successful 2014 edition, Founder of Africa’s Bokeh Fashion Film Festival, Adrian Lazarus, has brought the festival back for a second running; we’re not complaining. Two awesome days filled with amongst other things, talks and networking opportunities; we get to shop at the pop-up retail space and watch incredibly tailored films.

As avid promoters of local men’s fashion, we’re excited to see if the number of fashion films dedicated to menswear have increased since last year or not. Either way, we will still celebrate the local flavours and talents. As per royal fashion associations, BOKEH is once again title sponsored by Mercedes-Benz. Selvin Govender of Mercedes-Benz Cars was quoted as saying ‘their partnership with the Bokeh Fashion Film Festival plays an important role in highlighting Mercedes-Benz’s presence in the world of fashion and film’. This, a clear indication that Mercedes-Benz agree with the rest of us in the importance of highlighting key local trends through multimedia presentations of South Africa’s produce.

Lazarus comments, “We have now created an annual event that holds its own on the international fashion film calendar. We have been inviting international and local film submissions and look forward to what can only be yet again an incredible platform to showcase these focused masterpieces.”

The festival this year, will be hosted at the African Pride Hotel – 15 On Orange. This, over the two days: 27 + 28 March 2015. Mind you, those dates are the same as the Cape Town International Jazz Festival’s dates… We’re not missing all this fashion though!

Stay tune for updates on the schedules and any other related info. You can also visit http://ift.tt/1vWRGEf for additional information.
