#CAMPAIGN: Personal Space – AW15 – by Amos Tranque

We were first introduced to Amos Tranque during SAFW in 2014, during the menswear designer competition slot. It was pretty much love at first sight. Their AW15 campaign is further testament to why this love exists. Personal Space reflects a beautiful and almost ethereal depiction of our existence within this Earth. We being neither here nor there. It’s a little eerie, somewhat back-to-the-future, yet completely present in modern times.

The designers says ‘Personal Space is an analysis of the psychological aspects of space in relation to the physical body and mind. The design vocabulary of this collection explores the awareness about our personal space and the actions your body would take to protect itself’.

#NEWS: Converse Celebrates the Spirit of Andy Warhol with Winter 2015 All Star Collection

CONVERSE Inc. recently announced the Sub-Saharan African debut of the Winter 2015 Converse All Star Andy Warhol Collection in partnership with The Andy Warhol Foundation. Marrying Warhol’s distinct vision with the Converse Chuck Taylor All Star, the partnership between two pop culture icons celebrates creative self-expression and pays homage to the visionary artist. The new collection features bold Warhol imagery across an array of expressive Converse tees and footwear for men and women.

Hailed as the preeminent artist of the 20th century, Warhol was an iconic visionary whose legacy continues to inspire rebels and artists everywhere. He creatively merged pop culture, film, music, screen-printing and performance, opening the door for millions of artists and performers. Since 1987, Warhol’s vision and creativity lives on through The Andy Warhol Foundation, who fosters innovative artistic expression by supporting work that is challenging and experimental in nature.

“With this collection, we aim to celebrate and foster the innovative artistic expression that’s intrinsic to both Converse and Andy Warhol,” said Damion Silver, Converse All Star Design Director. “Andy Warhol famously created art inspired by American pop culture icons, and was a pioneer in utilizing the Chuck Taylor All Star as a blank canvas for his work. From this shared creative history grew our collaboration with Warhol.”

“The Foundation is delighted to celebrate the launch of the Converse Andy Warhol Collection,” said Michael Hermann of The Andy Warhol Foundation. “This unique collaboration honours the artist’s enduring legacy which inspires us to ignore convention and proudly be whatever we want to be.”

The Winter 2015 Converse Chuck Taylor Andy Warhol Sneaker Collection is available for purchase exclusively through selected Sportscene stores. Prices ranging from R979.95 - R1049.95

Cool Beer Labels

I love looking at cool beer labels just as much as I love drinking the stuff inside. "Cool" being the operative word - one person's cool is another person's meh - just like the taste. If it looks cool to me it will catch my attention; I get distracted with my eyes first, then I read the labels to try to decipher if I'll like it or not. It's a 50/50 gamble. Sometimes I'll love it, and sometimes I'll be left thinking, "Mannnn, I just spent £2.50 on that pap?!". That's all a part of the fun for me.

Cool Beer Labels: The Best Art + Design from Breweries Around the World by Daniel Bellon + Steven Speeg landed on my coffee table last Christmas, and it's been regularly thumbed ever since. It's packed full of interestingly designed labels, graphic design tales, branding projects, notes on what they think makes a great, eye-catching design and back stories on brewers from across the world.

The prelude by Daniel Bellon is a pretty funny one too. He shares his first encounter with beer as a teenager, why his "All American" father was so obsessed with imports, how he hated the taste for years but fell in love with Belgian beers when he was touring with his band in Europe, why it doesn't need to be looked at as a pretentious "hobby", and what makes for a memorable design.

Simply put, it's a wonderfully visual book by two people with backgrounds in graphic design, who have crazy-levels passion for beer + packaging.

#PRESS_RELEASE: The Onitsuka Tiger Colorado Eighty-Five Turns 30

To commemorate the COLORADO EIGHTY-FIVE’s 30th anniversary, Onitsuka Tiger is taking it back to its roots.

One of the pioneer trail running shoes in the ASICS family, the COLORADO EIGHTY-FIVE was created in the '80s and launched in 1985 at the peak of the running boom. At the request of their customers, designer Hase-san created “a brand new shoe, which people could run on unpaved roads and in the mountains.” At the time, according to Hase-san, "nobody could imagine running on mountain roads in Japan."

The design of the COLORADO EIGHTY-FIVE was based on ULTIMATE and ENDURO models, which Hase-san improved upon. The shoe’s soles featured hexagonal studs for grip and durability, with additional rigid studs applied close to the outer edge of the sole for improved traction, maximum grip and ruggedness required for rocky runs. The COLORADO EIGHTY-FIVE also featured added stability courtesy of the hard heel wedge (rubber heel cap), and covering up the cup sole from toe to midsole provided extra strength to combat the great outdoors.

Colorado 85 - Perf Suede

Colorado 85 - Outback Nubuck

Colorado 85 - Outdoor Nubuck

The latest version of the COLORADO EIGHTY-FIVE retains all the elements of the original –3M reflective heel window, rubber heel cap for stability, blocked EVA midsole, aggressive outsole, comfort and flexibility – but will release in four, sun drenched, earth toned colourways – tabasco red, green, brown, blue – all featuring rich nubuck and premium suede.

Onitsuka Tiger celebrates Japanese craftsmanship and focuses on sophisticated design and luxury details and will retail for R1249.

#EVENT: Spree AW15 Collections and Men’s Look Book

Online shopping platform Spree recently launched and showcased their AW15 ideas for men of South Africa. Presented at the Cape Town Club, the event hosted an estimated 400 guests from across the country, including our very own Features Writer, Jabu Sopete. This is what she had to say about the event itself:

“Industry creatives, bloggers, photographers and influencers flocked into the Cape Town Club on Thursday night to witness the launch of Spree’s AW15 Collections.

The night also saw the introduction and launch of a new department, which specifically caters for men, called “The collective” by Spree

On arrival, we were presented with an A4 sized newspaper-like look book and map to help us navigate around the building. The printed guide provides a glimpse of Spree’s digital magazine, which was recently launched this year.

The venue, which was three floors up, featured an array of installations divided between various floors of the Herbet Baker designed building. The ground floor, showcased apparel from The Collective by Spree, first floor displayed Women’s collection and second floor, presented Menswear.

Spree menswear presented a fresh and trendy tastes of urban streetwear from sweat shorts over tights to gym wear and the return of biker jackets and reinvented quilted jackets.  Among all the major streetwear brands featured in this category, was our very own successful SA street wear label, Head Honcho and Butan Wear.

Spree’s Fashion director, Chris Viljoen, spent the evening interacting with guests, taking them through the trends and collections, while still capturing the night’s moments with his go-pro device.”

- Words by Jabu Sopete

The Look Book
“As seen in the look book, Spree’s AW15 presentation for menswear predominantly plays it safe giving the everyday consumer the staples he is used to but in somewhat newer colourways and slightly trend-styled edits. We see with the introduction of revisited quilted jackets the brand’s attention to trend details. Other on-trend details include the sports luxe looks + sneaker combos with fitted trousers and fashion day shirts.

Overall, Spree presents a collection of items great for the winter wardrobe. Style savvy gents will easily adopt items and transform them to higher levels of fashion conscience by mixing them with tailored and custom-made garments. There are some ideal pieces, even I’m keen to get my hands on, including the three-button coat.”

- Words by Monde Mtsi

Spree’s AW15 menswear collection is available immediately on www.spree.co.za.
